Chipton-Ross is seeking an FPGA Design Engineer for an opening in Sunnyvale, CA.

The analytical instrument group is looking for a staff Firmware Design Engineer to create FPGA designs through all phases of development. The ideal candidate is expected to perform activities including assisting in requirements generation and design architecture, as well as ownership of RTL coding, synthesis, basic test bench development, lab testing, and product support. The candidate will provide technical direction to a team in the design of new firmware architectures, applications, and libraries to ensure on-time delivery and requirements are met. The candidate will interface with cross-functional teams to define products requirements spanning from exploratory stage to commercial launch.

Translate hardware requirements into Hardware Description Language (HDL) designs. Evaluate FPGA performance using simulation tools (ModelSim). Working knowledge of FPGA on-chip debug tool (Reveal/ChipScope/SignalTap) for popular FPGA architectures (Lattice/Xilinx/Intel). Familiarity with static time analysis. Integrate code in a laboratory environment. Debug FPGA code with hardware to interface to peripherals such as high-resolution ADC, DAC, and EEPROM, and to electromechanical devices (valves, relays, motors). Microprocessor/microcontroller architecture & design; real-time operating system knowledge is required. Architecture is typically based on 32-bit microcontroller or DSP with support of CPLD/FPGA. Implement and document test cases to verify design and/or regression analysis. Communication schemes and drivers development, such as USB 2.0, SPI and I2C. Develop embedded firmware (C/C++) to interface to FPGA for motion and temperature controls. Exercises independent judgement, and works well under pressure in a dynamic environment.

15+ years’ experience in design/development with popular FPGA (ex. Intel, Xilinx, Lattice), utilizing industry standard software development tools. Experience with FPGA development process and document design from concept to production release. Verilog/VHDL code generation, test bench development, writing timing constraints, perform simulations, place and route and static timing analysis. Collaborate with firmware engineer in implementing drivers and application environment, for communication between firmware & electrical design. Integrate code in a laboratory environment. Experience with DSP fundamentals and FPGA implementation. 7+ years of experience with embedded C/C++. Knowledge and practical experience in all firmware/software development lifecycle phases. Developing microcontroller RTOS. Experience with PID control and digital filtering. Experience with static and dynamic code analysis. Experience with software and hardware hands-on lab debug. Familiarity with configuration management tools, defect tracking tools, and peer reviews. Good understanding of communication schemes and driver development (ex. UART, CAN, Ethernet, RS485, SPI, and I2C). Understand common microprocessor hardware architecture and interface. Document and conduct design software/firmware design verification testing (black box, white box, unit test). Conducting and documenting technical design reviews with fellow engineers in a collaborative way to produce the highest levels of quality, performance, manufacturing yield and product reliability. Support manufacturing, quality, marketing, and service group on on-market products. Ability to read schematics and component data sheets, basic understanding of digital circuits and interaction between firmware and electronics. Demonstrated ability using laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power supplies, e-loads, and data acquisition systems. Self-motivated, organized, efficient, and process oriented with a strong work ethic. A great team player and is willing to be a mentor or mentee. Ability to lead a design team.

Accredited High School Diploma/GED
